They were reported to be at the deepest part of the mine when they were found. At that depth it would be very hard to drill straight down to their location. Any variance on the drill angle could put the hole off track by several yards and therfore miss them. Another problem is that when the mine exploded, the miners didn't stay in their exact location. They are supposed to move to a safe area where they wait for the rescue teams.
