O.T. - Trenching/ditching machines - chain type

Kind of a self propelled implement, but O.T., a little, anyone ever try to use one and get through frost ? I know those vermeer's with the milling wheels cut through concrete, but what about the chain type ditching/trench machines, dear ole dad would like to use one for a long trench for a new power service, but I think a small hoe may have to suffice now that the frost is set in, be curious if anyone could confirm what I suspect. Was in the earthwork field for years, but never really got too close to one, they used them for silt fence installation mostly, but no frost in the ground. Never saw one used in the winter time.
