Kind of a self propelled implement, but O.T., a little, anyone ever try to use one and get through frost ? I know those vermeer's with the milling wheels cut through concrete, but what about the chain type ditching/trench machines, dear ole dad would like to use one for a long trench for a new power service, but I think a small hoe may have to suffice now that the frost is set in, be curious if anyone could confirm what I suspect. Was in the earthwork field for years, but never really got too close to one, they used them for silt fence installation mostly, but no frost in the ground. Never saw one used in the winter time.

Just wanted to say thanks for the input, I'm thinking hoe, he's thinking trencher, only 2'-0" deep, but there may be rocks or shale, I'll let him know re: frost chain, and will see what happens, power company is no hurry to do the job, we have to do the trench, and the huge riding arena which is the main feature of the place is in the dark still, since August, hurting business, can only ride in the day and it's very dim.

Wayne Roy Backhoe in reply to Billy NY, 12-12-2005 21:01:10
I'm considering purchasing a Wayne-Roy backhoe, does anyone know where I can obtain info on these machines? Internet searches came up empty as well as a site search here. Ny help would be appreciated. This will be my first venture into old tractors.

Joe

I've got an older Vermeer trencher and have gotten along fine in shallow frost (2-4") but have not tried it any deeper. FRost teeth might be in order.Digging teeth tend to break the frost out in chunks.HTH

I ran one years ago for gas line instalations. There is a frost chain you can put on and it will cut a trench just as fast as a backhoe it you have a good operator. I found the biggest problem was rocks embeded in the soil.

A frost chain is the way to go.Been there done that. I had a small Ditch R65, slow but faster than a small backhoe neater trench, chains not cheap but if you need to get the job done.... very hard on a small backhoe. Wheels OK for shallow trench.

A vibratory plow might work (used for irrigation system installation). Don't know about frost tho.
