Monte, The post from old is absolutely right. Simply insuring that the #1 piston is up is only half of the story. You must insure that the number 1 piston is up on the compression stroke, not on the exhaust stroke. If you can see the timing marks, you can verify that you are on the compression stroke if the timing mark shows that you are at top dead center when the piston reaches the top of the cylinder. If for some reason you can't see the timing mark, you can remove the rocker arm cover and watch the valves while you rotate the engine. When both valves are closed and the number one piston is at the top of the cylinder, that is zero degrees (TDC). Good luck, Tom in TN
