Finding TDC of Number one Cylinder

I have an Oliver Supper 77 and want to find TDC of number one cylinder in the compression stroke. What is the easiest way to do this? Thanks in advance for your help!!

I don't knowhow accurate you want to be but to find TDC the easy way is to pull the plugs, stick something into no. 1 that will not hurt the threads in the plug hole, will contact the piston as it is slowly brought up by you turning the engine over slowly. You turn in one direction until you bump the stop. Mark the flywheel or crank pully. Now turn the other way until you again bump the stop. Mark the flywheel or crank pully again. Half way between the two marks is TDC. You must not let the stop you put into the cylinder move while you are doing this procedure. The hot rodders and other engine builders use this method to degree in camshafts. Only they bolt a stop over the piston before the head is on and use a degree wheel temporarly mounted on the crank.

Monte,

The post from old is absolutely right. Simply insuring that the #1 piston is up is only half of the story. You must insure that the number 1 piston is up on the compression stroke, not on the exhaust stroke. If you can see the timing marks, you can verify that you are on the compression stroke if the timing mark shows that you are at top dead center when the piston reaches the top of the cylinder.

If for some reason you can't see the timing mark, you can remove the rocker arm cover and watch the valves while you rotate the engine. When both valves are closed and the number one piston is at the top of the cylinder, that is zero degrees (TDC).

You are totally correct on your post,there has been untold amounts of starters burned up trying to start engines when timed on exhaust stroke,most rednecks around here use your method.

like someone else said, pull out the #1 spark plug and put yr finger in the hole and slowly bump the engine over and when you feel and hear the "whoosh" of compression then you should be on it. check yr timing mark to verify

you can also put a piece of wire down the spark plug hole and watch & feel it being pushed upward. When it stops and starts to go back down you found it. Also you may be able to shine a light source into the plug hole and be able to see the top of the piston when it hits tdc. It may help to try this in the dark.

That only works 50% of the time the other 50% is the exhaust stroke which will not help him much if any

Well you pull #1 plug out and hold you finger over the plug hole and slowly crank the engine till it starts to push you finger off. Then just watch the timing mark to get it all the way up.
