Most domestic manufacturers recomend changing the tranmission oil every 30,000-36,000 on front wheel drive cars. Take it to a TRANSMISSION SHOP (you're beyond going to a quick lube place now) and have them diagnosis it for you. They can drop the pan and give a decent idea as to what you have just by analysing the oil and the debris in the pan. Most likely they'll tell you to change the oil (and flush?) then drive it till it drops.
