Buick tranny clunkin and whinin'

Yesterday I was driving up into hilly country and I noticed the tranny started clunking into each gear and then whining a lot in gear. I stopped and checked the ATF level and it was just fine. This was happening on the hills as well as on the flat. I stopped for fuel and a rest for about 15 minutes and then continued. NO MORE clunking and whining. It completely stopped. So my question, did it just get too hot or is the ATF starting to break down? I've never changed the ATF. What should be done to renew the fluid?
