I just read all the threads. You got some good advice here. I have a 98 with 80K miles. It also has CSK (cold start knock), to which Chevy says it is normal. (Just give me an abnormal quiet 350 then, without leaking intake manifold gasket, pitting front rotors, corroded wheel speed sensors, or failing tailgate cables.)
I have been successful in reducing CSK by using the 5-30 pure synthetic oil and Delco oil filter. Fram would be the last on my list. You want the oil to flow fast and get to the piston skirts ASAP.
My CSK started at 17K, and has become progressively worse, lasting longer and beging at warmer temperatures. The last I heard it was primarily #1 cylinder, but no supporting evidence.

GM was paying replace pistons with a composite skirt, but would not pay to replace rings, again rumour, but a GM service manager said if I elected to have new pistons in my engine, I would not be happy with oil consumption.

Any wonder GM is having to give their rigs away?
