I have seen ps pump shafts shear off. Maybe three in my 30 year carreer. Parts will and do fail. Brakes, steering and suspension components take a good beating and are many times overlooked at PM services. It takes more than an oil change to keep a vehicle running. Power steering pump shaft failures are caused by holding the steering wheel hard against the stops for extended periods. I beleive this was on a ASE test I took a couple years ago.
