This is kind of an update to my post about the Dodge hemi. In that post I mentioned that the power steering had stopped working on the wifes '01 trailblazer. Recieved a phone call from the dealers shop where we took it, and was told that the shaft in the pump had sheared off. Now I don't know what the rest of you think, but I feel that this is a serious safety issue, and G.M. needs to address this issue. According to the service manager, the shaft breaking is unusual, but not unheard of. Ours is not the first one they have seen.

my 98 GMC did the same thing. Try driving a 1 ton no power stering means no power brakes.

I have seen ps pump shafts shear off. Maybe three in my 30 year carreer. Parts will and do fail. Brakes, steering and suspension components take a good beating and are many times overlooked at PM services. It takes more than an oil change to keep a vehicle running.
Power steering pump shaft failures are caused by holding the steering wheel hard against the stops for extended periods. I beleive this was on a ASE test I took a couple years ago.

at least the gas tank didnt fall off aka ford. not a huge issue all vehicles HAVE TO HAVE (federal regulation a) mechanical braking system and mechanical steering system. not pleasant but not a huge huge huge issue. now try driving a semi, 14,000 lbs on the steer axle and have the line break pump go etc etc somewhat a issue esp most semis are mis aligned front ends and with the high sides wind tends to push them around on a good day.

I have driven semis without power steering, and I know all about how the wind will play with that trailer. I laid one over once because of a strong wind, but you missed the point entirely. If the vehicle has power steering, and then all of a sudden it doesn't, just when you are trying to correct a skid because of unexpected ice, well, it becomes an issue, real quick.

Yes, I agree, it is a Serious safety issue... It has been a while, but I have found websites that listed recalls & TSB's, you might want to do a little research... The fact that the failure caused an accident seems to make it worth reporting.. Save all the paperwork, in case there is a recall at a later date...
