As long as the battery is the correct voltage for your system and it fits without the terminals touching an metal parts causing a short the truck bat is fine. Mine is a diesel, so I looked up the wiring and it appears all models are negative ground with the positive bat terminal connected to the starter solenoid. The negative cable may appear to connect to the starter motor but it hooks to earth ground, engine block. At least thats the way mine is and how it is shown on page 56 in the"IT", shop service manual. The, B, or Batt,terminal on your voltage regulator also connects to the starter solenoid at the same location as the battery + or positive cable.
