14.9's aren't wider - actually an inch narrower, but much taller; and due to the larger girth it's footprint is a little larger- more of a dozer track event. 15.5's were designed, back when, to have the same rolling radius as the 13.6's so duals could be put on with the popular at the time 12-38's (now 13.6-38). The 15.5's low profile is the reason pullers like 14.9's and 16.9,s. I have two tractors in my shop right now, sitting side-by-side, one on 14.9-38's the other on 15.5-38's. The 14.9's are noticebly taller
