My farm is in a very rough section of Kentucky along a river. Consequently, I have habitat for many species of snakes, bad and good. I encourage my family to deal with them and leave them along. I am covered up with black snakes. I have not seen a poisonous snake since I bought the place. I don't like snakes either, and I darn sure don't go looking for them. But when I run across them, I cut them a wide swath so they hang around. I finally got rid of the mice by putting out some D'Con. Beleive me, it worked. The place stank for a coupe of weeks while the mice carcusses rotted away but we have not seen mice droppings in the barn, no nibbling on feedsacks, and no insulation chewed off of wires since I did it. I was going to try the instant mashed potato thing with a bowl of water, but never got around to it. The boys and I thought it would be more entertaining that the bug zapper! Oh well, maybe next spring!
