Noticed alot of snakes around the house lately. Any way to keep them away from the house. I hate snakes and most of the time if I see them they end up dead. I just hope one don't end up in the house. Thanks

I've had that trouble with a few old snakes in my day.

I finally just had to tell 'em to quit callin' and drivin' by my house. :>)

My farm is in a very rough section of Kentucky along a river. Consequently, I have habitat for many species of snakes, bad and good. I encourage my family to deal with them and leave them along. I am covered up with black snakes. I have not seen a poisonous snake since I bought the place. I don't like snakes either, and I darn sure don't go looking for them. But when I run across them, I cut them a wide swath so they hang around. I finally got rid of the mice by putting out some D'Con. Beleive me, it worked. The place stank for a coupe of weeks while the mice carcusses rotted away but we have not seen mice droppings in the barn, no nibbling on feedsacks, and no insulation chewed off of wires since I did it. I was going to try the instant mashed potato thing with a bowl of water, but never got around to it. The boys and I thought it would be more entertaining that the bug zapper! Oh well, maybe next spring!

Didn't ST. PATRICK rid the snake in Ireland? Might GOOGLE and see how he did it.

If you have a lot of snakes you probably have a large food source for them. Remove the food source and they will move on.

If it is a blacksnake (or black racer), try to leave it alone. They are good snakes. They keep mice down and are predators to poisionous snakes. I know, they give me the creeps also. But if I see a blacksnake, I just let the cold shiver go up my back, say hello to him and walk around and leave him alone. If it is close to the house, I try to run him back into the woods.

Chris, CATS, get yourself a passle of barn cats. This will be the best way to help keep snakes and mice and rats in check. We have only had one snake show up in the last 12 yrs. It was a bull snake.
Later,
John A.
PS
We have 2 blue healer dogs and about 10 barn cats, We go through 50 lbs of dog food every 2.5 weeks.

Have cats, no mice or snakes. Neighbors have killed some big rattlers but I have never seen one on our property. Used to have lots of skunks. I even saw one lined up at the dish with the cats.
A den of foxes moved in nearby, no more skunks. Ed

As some of these guys have said get rid of their food source and they'll move off hence the cats. Cats, no mice, no snakes.
Personally I like them as they have their place in the order of things. Don't like copperheads around the house but otherwise just leave them alone. Try to never kill one unless they become to accustomed to hanging around the house. Rattlers are a no no unless their in the woods or away from the house. Far away.....

I had always heard that if you had cats around your place, you wouldn"t have snakes. As much as I dislike cats, I have found it to be true. Of course, then you won"t have mice, either. As long as I keep a couple of cats around, I never see snakes in their territory. I have a neighbor who claims to have even seen 2 cats team up to kill a rattlesnake.

I see our barn cats eating several snakes a year. The amuunt of stuff those cats catch amazes me. The catch a ton of squirells which is nice since then I don't have to worry about the fruit trees. I would believe several cats would kill a rattler. I've watched three cats kill a full grown groundhog. I'll tell you what, I am waiting to see those cats try either a turkey or a deer next. I think they could do it.

99% of snakes are very good and depending on where your at it can be a big fine to kill them. The only one to worry about are the ones that can send you to the hospital all the others are very good to have and for that matter save you $$ by eating mice, rats and bugs

The reason you are seening lots of snakes around, is you probably have mice under and around your house.. Get rid of the pest and snakes will leave....HTH.. Keith

Have some Marines host a survival training course there ! I hate snakes! But understand there are some good snakes to have around . My son sent me pics when he was in Thailand , Jungle training .They had to catch and kill a cobra barehanded, and that was supper also . Said the Thai troops really got into it . Was told be be carefull, if bit had 20 min,,and nearest hospital was hr away .

Cobra's yeah, there is one called a 2 step(nickname). It's green and you can figure why if you get bit in two steps, that's all you got!

Thanks for the advice guys. I have been turning down free cats for about 6 months now. Guess I should start taking them home. I'll take some from Mom's house tonight and see what happens. Thanks again guys.
