I have a Honda 450 4X4 (2003) that I bought new. It has the manual transmission which is hard to get a big boot under, especially with the optional footboards that I installed. It will climb a tree, go through any mud I can find, climb hills that you could not walk up, and carry me and the wife at the same time. The only thing I do not like about the honda is the brakes. They are always messed up. I take them apart and clean them and they work for about two days before they are grabbing, squealling or just not grabbing. I finally bought a 2002 used Polaris 400 4X4 with the automatic transmission and I love it. The four wheel drive is excellent, the ATV is powerful enough to load down with feed, seed or chain saws and haul out to the woods, even with a second person on the back. Both of the ATV's get excellent fuel economy and I am giving my worn out knee a few more years before I go under the knife. I drag logs with either ATV, and I have pulled the hay trailer (empty) up a long hill with the Honda with no problem. I am looking hard at the Kubota 4X4 diesel. It has the wide bench seat that will accomodate me and the wife side by side. The neighbor bought one and he really swears by it. He hauls rock up from the river with his, and it is straight up hill most of the way. He has hauled a round bail to the field on the electric dump bed and he says it handled it very well. Price has me cold. At 10K, I have a bunch of stuff that needs attention before I turn loose of that much hard earned coin. I'm afraid the wife might start pushing the issue of a new horse if I get another toy. Might send her to Nebraska for a while if she keeps pushing it. Oh well!

Today's Featured Article - Gatherin of the Orange - by Rick Nikolich. In July of 1998 I was talking to fellow Allis Chalmers collector Mike Schilling about the annual "Gathering of The Orange" AC show coming up in August of 1999. He got this wild idea that we should get a convoy of AC tractors and drive them from Charlotte, Michigan 105 miles to LaGrange, Indiana. ... [Read Article]
