carb rebuild question

got a carb rebuild kit for the MarvelSchebler (sp?) TSX616 carb from NAPA. There is a small spring with it that the instructions shows goes onto the float valve (float valve kinda has a pin head). I put it on and it "looks ok" and the float seems to move ok. I had never seen this before and I was wondering what this is for and how does it work??? The reason for the rebuild was to fix a stuck float (flooding/overflow on the floor) so I don"t want any more difficulty with the float. Thanks for the feedback
