Ya it`s plenty overkill, but fairly common.
Then you`ll see the F150 w/5.0 or 5.8 with an
AODE behind it. Go figure. GM did the same type of thing for years, running the 700/4L60E behind everything from a 4cyl S10 to a light 3/4 ton.
Most of the problems you see with the E4OD come from bigger trucks with more horse/torque that get the snot worked out of them.
