There is also a devise known as a Revolution Counter, think that is it anyway. Basically it is a worm gear driving a dial with numbers on it that tell the number of turns of the worm. You hold it to the end of a shaft for one minute and read the dial for rpm. Or hold it on for 1/4 or 1/2 minute and multiply. Simple and versitle. It will work down to only a few rpm, and up to 5000 I think. Mine is a Starrett, bought it a few years ago for around $30, probably more now, and mine was supposed to be a "deal". A good tool anyway. It isn't likely to stop working or go out of calibration either.
