Does anyone know of anything that you can buy or anyway to check the RPMs on an antique tractor, especially two cylinder tractors?

How about a dewll meter. Their $25 at any autoparts store. They check voltage, dwell, and rpm. Mine is for 4 & 8 cylinder models. For a 2 cylinder set it on 4 and divide the reading by 2. Very simple

An alternative, if it has a PTO, is to run a slow machine - baler for instance, and calculate back using machine data from the counts you get from the machine.

Aloha, If you get the mechanical type rpm gauge, make sure you have enough room in front of the shaft where it is going to be applied. My gauge is about 7"'s in length so it would be a tight squeeze in a confined area (watch your hand). I would go with the electronic type even if it costs a little more.

Northern Tools sells one for about $35. It's digital and hooks to one of the spark plugs. James

There is also a devise known as a Revolution Counter, think that is it anyway. Basically it is a worm gear driving a dial with numbers on it that tell the number of turns of the worm. You hold it to the end of a shaft for one minute and read the dial for rpm. Or hold it on for 1/4 or 1/2 minute and multiply. Simple and versitle. It will work down to only a few rpm, and up to 5000 I think. Mine is a Starrett, bought it a few years ago for around $30, probably more now, and mine was supposed to be a "deal". A good tool anyway. It isn't likely to stop working or go out of calibration either.

Have always used the dial type Stewart Warners with the rubber tips on end. You put them in the middle of the shaft and not on the outside of a flywheel. Go to McMaster Carr site and type in tachometers on search and find 5 pages to look at. Item # 1416T1 is they type I was talking about. Can get the electronic ones for more $$ too. If you are going to use one a lot the electronic one would be the way to go. If buying some NOS mechanical ones that have been sitting a long time the bearings inside will be squealing and going out in no time.

Hi Mike,

I have a photocell tach that plugs in to my DVM. It uses a piece of reflective tape on the rotater to read rpm's and is caliberated by spoting a floresence lite. A FL stobes at 7000cycles per minute. About $70

Ollie, I tried to send you an e-mail but it won't work. I have one of the smaller A.C. brand tachs. that I would sell.
