They are basically identical in appearance and horsepower, having minor differences of more interest to purists and collectors, than actual differences in operation. Both have 3-speed transmissions. The 9N was the earlier model, intoduced in 1939. The 2N was the later model, introduced in 1942. The 8N was introduced for 1948 (late 1947?), and is considered by some to be more desirable because of slightly more HP, a 4-speed transmission, and the added feature of depth control on the 3-point hitch. Any of the three models could have an aftermarket auxillary transmission installed, giving overdrive, or underdrive, or over, direct, and under, depending upon the specific unit installed. http://home.att.net/~jmsmith45/identify.htm http://www.jacksonpowersteering.com/identify.html
