unstyled 1937 L

Need help
I am looking at puchasing a unstyled 1937 john deere L. The owner says that they engine may have been replaced. He was told because of the four holes near the bottom of the engine, that they should not be there. Someone has told him that it has come from an industrial L. It is a hercules engine, but he thought it was for a industrial tractor. Can anyone tell me if this could of been the correct engine or is it going to effect the value and not be accetable?
