Need help I am looking at puchasing a unstyled 1937 john deere L. The owner says that they engine may have been replaced. He was told because of the four holes near the bottom of the engine, that they should not be there. Someone has told him that it has come from an industrial L. It is a hercules engine, but he thought it was for a industrial tractor. Can anyone tell me if this could of been the correct engine or is it going to effect the value and not be accetable?

thanks Dan

The L ad the LI; industrial; were different in the height of tractor; shorter spindals but other wise about the same; should be no difference in engine. L was not made in 37, introudced in 38. previous tractor was the 62 and it seems if I remember corectly their are only 60 some tractors accounted for and that is a 90% serviveal rate. the styled L; LI & LA were introudced in 41 and the L was the small tractor with 22" rear tires while the LA was the larger; same size as the H; and on 24" tires and production of all ended in 46 with the M taking over in 47 and about 5 horse bigger than the LA

First I will tell you I am not a buff on John Deeres'. I am looking at my history books and it says in 1938 the L was introduced with the Hercules engine (first year production of an L). In 1946 they changed to John Deere engines but were less powerful than the Hercules motor and it became the LA at that time. The LA has rounded sheetmetal over the back of the engine. The L has slotted front wheels & LA is solid rims also LA has a light mounted on the steering shaft support post. Hope these few things will help. As for the bolt holes that could be for anything.

they had a herc smaller than the 1939's a picture would help. The industrial ad the same that year just painted yellow. look at the old paint or scrap it a bit (look for yellow) Be carfull on the unstyled L parts are hard to get.
