O.T. traveling around Chicago

I have to go to Michigan Sunday and when I get there it will probably be the afternoon everybody lined up to get home traffic jam time. I will be going in on I-80. Is there any detour a guy could take to stay out of the gridlock, maybe US-30 or further south? I am sure it is as bad or worse than coming in on 90 on the north side of town. Thanks in advance for your advice.
