Tom Lee is correct. However your tractor was orginally 6v POSITIVE ground. If you get the ammeter hooked incorrectly the meter will only read backward, no damage. There is no real need to verify that the battery and generator are correct polarity. You only need to know if it is capable of charging. After starting the tractor disconnect one lead from the battery at the ground or at the solenoid(safety reason). If the tractor continues to run the generator is working. If it dies the regulator or generator is bad. Reconnect the battery. Rev the engine and watch your ammeter. If it moves to charge all is O.K. If it discharges when reved switch the wires on the ammeter. All should be right.
