Generator theory rusty, but you had to energize the gen with a small current to get the gen to put out. I think the armature (rotor) gets the current and the rotating magnetic field generates current in the stator (field) windings. The more the "priming" current or the faster it (the armature) turns, the more the induced voltage in the field and resultant higher power output. To recharge the battery you have to put out a voltage higher than it's terminal voltage. That difference divided by the circuit resistance determines the charging current. If the battery is highly discharged, it's terminal voltage will be low. If the rpm's are high and the gen has adequate go ahead excitation (priming) current, the gen could be damaged by excessive output current. That's why voltage regulators look at voltage and current to keep the gen from frying it'self. My 2c. Mark
