Sounds like the upper bearing is shot. That is only part of your problem, with that much backlash your steering sector bushings are likely shot as well, and more than likely quite a bit of teeth wear on the gears due to improper lubrication (these steering boxes are notorious for leaks). If you have the early 8N box it is much harder to rebuild effectively then the later model 8N box.
