I took it apart and it all looks good execpt the bearing under the steering weeel is gone. the wheel raises as you turn it until it catches then the wheels turn.Could the bearing be the problem? If so what fits it? thanks for any help

Thats fixable due to lack of lub the upper cone bearing falls apart. this bearing is located in the steering column housing. The use of corn oil head [JD] or OO, OOO. it flows, lubs and doesen't leak. I have a scan of a 55 Oliver system which is the same as yours with the same problems. I f you want a scan send me a e mail through YT's reply.

Sounds like the upper bearing is shot. That is only part of your problem, with that much backlash your steering sector bushings are likely shot as well, and more than likely quite a bit of teeth wear on the gears due to improper lubrication (these steering boxes are notorious for leaks). If you have the early 8N box it is much harder to rebuild effectively then the later model 8N box.

Good luck,
Dan

Dan's right - replace the parts and forget the oil - cram the thing full of chassis grease.
