Around here new installations of standby power transfer switches have to be four pole on single phase services. The neutral and ground have to be switched and transfered as well as the two live lines.
They want to ensure the ground does not become a current carrying conductor back to the transformers center tap.
A stand alone generator with plug in loads is supposed to have the neutral and ground bonded.
A standby generator connected to a building service. Is supposed to have the ground and neutral isolated from each other.
