GM, Toyota, Ford, Daimler - Chrysler, all produce what the market wants. People wanted big cars, trucks. Some guys I know bought big diesel duallys to drag motor homes around, ( 5th wheel ) . Then they drove them back and forth to work, Just to get some use out em. But when fuel was $1 a gallon, that was affordable. Not anymore. Easy.
