I don't know about the diesel atomatics having problems. My 92 Dodge diesel has 230,000 miles on it with no problems. It may have been replaceed before I got it with 111,000 miles on it. I haven't been easy on it either. I get close to 20 mpg empty and around 15 mpg depending on the load and the number of hills. On heavy pulls I have to kick out the OD to keep the engine temp down. The engine has been tweeked also. The first Dodge diesel had some problems, but they fixed those.
