Maybe he just opened a bale where you had a damp slug. I'd sure go bust a couple and take a look. Also take you moisture and temperature probe and get some readings. Hay should heat up some in the bale to cure right but not to the point of molding. Normally as you know you can generally feel this heat when your taking it off the wagon.
Bales that wick up moisture from the ground will mold differently than if baled with to much moisture plus its a different type mold. High moisture when baled will mold from the center out.
Apparently your experience didn't set off any alarms so I'd sure question it.
