How's the oil level? It could be low, or the synchro's could be going bad, if it's not shifting properly. It's also possible that there are some clutch issues developing, and the clutch is not fully disengaging. That is often less noticeable in higher gears.
I can't say that the last one I drove was very nice to begin with. I'd much sooner drive any roadranger than a syncronized medium duty transmission. Mabey this one is just ignorant to shift? Don't know.
