Not checking them is the main reason you see rods through the block. The broken cap as desribed in one of the other posts is a reason to check, not a reason not to. 5700 hrs at light use may not be that bad. 10000 hrs is way too many. Heavy use, I would change the bearings in not more than 2000 hours. ASAE defines the life of an engine is when you have spent the original cost of a piece of equipment on repairs.
