I recently had a conversation with an engine rebuilder that had a Perkins 236 engine he had obtained from another guy that had decided to rebuild it. The owner had broken a main bearing cap and for some reason, they are not obtainable separately. So the engine instantly became scrap. So I wouldn"t teardown an engine just for the heck of it unless there is some indication of trouble such as oil analysis or other symptoms.
