Sounds like you are gettig air in your fuel system some how. I would not give up on it as they are a real power system when they run good. Most power strokes will run 4-5 hundred thousand miles. Mine is delivering 21.5 Miles per gallon empty and 13 pulling the 6500 Moline on the trailer. I doubt that it is the cam position sensor but it is a popular item that will give you problems. About $100.00 dollar item and 10 minutes to replace. Good luck with it Jerry
