By 2000 the head gasket problem was supposed to be taken care of on the 4.2. The 1997 & 1998 models are notorious for this problem, average repair runs from $650 to well over a $1000. Once repaired with an after market gasket kit (not an OEM kit - still have the same problem) they soldier on to be decent engines if not run too long with the blown head gasket.
