I need a new work truck. I have been looking for a Ford F 150 v 6 auto, short bed step side. I found one it is s 97 with 64,000 mi. The seller wants 7,250.00 Does any one out there own one of these? Is the ford v 6 a good motor? Does the short wheel base give a rougher ride? Thanks for any input on this truck? Stan in Calif

Read BLW's post below and believe it. Ford's 300 straight six was one of the best engines ever. I wish I could buy a new one today.

I have a 2001 v-6 5speed. I love it! It will pull a mountain, and I get 20 mpg if I drive the speed limit. I would not buy a 97 or 98 model with a v-6 unless you are sure that the engine has had the gasket issues resolved.

I forgot to say, the gasket problems were resolved by the 99 model year.

Go to (www.kbb.com)(Kelly Blue Book) and you can get the price of any used car or truck. I did it on the truck you discribe and it said the asking price in a private sell should be $4850 in my area. CLW

I have a 2000 F 150, short bed, flairside, with the V6. I get 17mpg highway, pretty bad for a 6. Other than mileage, I love the truck. The price he"s asking is about what I"d get for mine on a trade, and mine looks new, runs new, and only has 40k miles..... .....Stan

By 2000 the head gasket problem was supposed to be taken care of on the 4.2. The 1997 & 1998 models are notorious for this problem, average repair runs from $650 to well over a $1000.

Once repaired with an after market gasket kit (not an OEM kit - still have the same problem) they soldier on to be decent engines if not run too long with the blown head gasket.

I have a 95 f150 last of the straight 6's 300 6cyl. 5 spd air in excelent cond. I love this truck and kept it just for the straight 6, I was afraid of the v6's if it has a 4.? it will take more gas- mine gets good milage-- other than that I guess it turned out to be a fairly good motor- some valve prob's. mine is for sale if interested i am in NY state just below Albany, this truck is real nice only used as a car, it has 70+ K miles and I must get about 7000. it must be seen, where are you located

Unless the engine has been rebuilt I'd avoid it like the plague. The 4.2 is a spin off of the 3.8 V6 and has the same head gasket problem.

The price does sound a high considering it is a 8 year old (almost 9 model years) old PU with the base engine and I'm assuming regular cab. Trade on that is about $3750, their price is even higher then Kelly Blue Book retail price (they are always too high).

Used PU sales (prices too?) are going to take a hit while Chevy is running this employee discount sale. My company just bought three, an employee was complaining that he OWED more his 2004 then we PAID for our new 2005s.

I have owned Ford trucks all my life and have had excellent luck with them. The only exception was a 97 F150 with the V6 motor. Ford had big time problems with the motor, if you dont belive me check it out on some of the Ford owners sites. The V6 motor in that year was nothing but trouble stay away from it. Do a "Google" search on 97 F150 with the V6 motor. Good luck in your search. I like the Fords, but that motor was not a good one.

I love ford, but stay far far far away from the v6 4.2

good luck
