Use 3 good stakes that will withstand the pull of the tree. More leaves and fullness creates a greater pull. If the stake is small enough that it will bend the tree may not pull it out the ground but it will bend it over.

Go outside the root ball into hard ground and place the 3 stakes spaced around the tree.

Use wire with a old piece of garden hose slipped over it to protect the tree trunk. Tie the wire from the stake to the tree. Try to get as high as you can on the main trunk just under where it starts to branch out. This will put the leverage on your side rather than on the trees side.

Leave the tree staked for at least 1 year until you get good root growth.
