Lead additives?

I just bought another 8N after being without one for 6 years. My first one spent alot of time with Ron the tractor Doc, and always sounded like it was gonna blow a rod out the side. We babied it as well as we could to eek the last bit of life out of it. On e thing we did was use a lead additive in the gas. Do I need to find a black market for the stuff? The fella I bought this old dear from did not think his father used any and he has not used any the few times he has used it. Can anyone enlighten me? Thanks
