Given the age of a 311 and my interpretation of your problem, I think there is WAY too much endplay in the knotter stack for starters. Maybe a sheared drive pin in addition, or other problems. As suggested, get a manual and read it. The operators manual will give you what you need; NH never published a service manual for 300 series balers choosing instead to write a very, very good op manual.
