Nick, Standard plugs for the N series is Autolite AL-437. You may start there to get a baseline. "Soot" suggests a dry deposit and it sounds to me like it is runnng too rich. Make sure that the air cleaner is flowing unrestricted air. Could be a simple carb adustment to back off the jet and lean the mixture out. This should get you going in the right direction but if it"s smoking, we will need to know what that looks like to be able to help further.
