DEAR SIR I HAVE A 9N FORD TRACTOR THE PROBLEM IS THAT DOEN'T KEEP ON RUNNING SPARK PLUGS GET DARK BLACK FROM SUIT BUILD UP .I CLEEN THEM ,START THE ENGINE AGAIN AND AFTER A FEW MINUTES STOPS RUNNING AGAIN.I CHECK PLUGS AGAIN AND THEY ARE AS DIRTY AS THEY WERE BEFORE.I RESET THE GAP BUT IT DOESN;T HELP. WATS WRONG?

Nick,

Standard plugs for the N series is Autolite AL-437. You may start there to get a baseline.

"Soot" suggests a dry deposit and it sounds to me like it is runnng too rich. Make sure that the air cleaner is flowing unrestricted air. Could be a simple carb adustment to back off the jet and lean the mixture out.

This should get you going in the right direction but if it"s smoking, we will need to know what that looks like to be able to help further.

You could have a number of problems, carb set to rich, burning oil, and or weak spark.

Is it smoking during the time it is running?? Sounds like carb trouble,but to soot them up that quick,it should be smoking some..How bout using oil??
