Ford 2000 4cyl gas no spark

I rebuilt a 1963 ford 4 Cyl Gas 134ci motor for my friends tractor. the firing order I believe to be 1243 and the dist. turns clockwise. I have 12V at he coil wire and with my tester pluged into my #1 plug wire I have eratic voltage but no spark with plug Plugged in. Any ideas? Also ther is a black wire with a - sign next to it coming off of the coil. I grounded this ti the block, is this the correct thing to do with this wire? Thanks for any help, I appreciate it. Travis
