As you can see this is really not the type of question you can ask on a national discussion board because every state has different rules and what may be the correct way in my state will not work in your state. Call your local DMV and they will tell you all you need to know. Now with that said let me add my 2¢ and guess at how your state does it. If you look at the plates available from your state (Here) you will see they offer tags for different weights up to and above 22,000 lbs. I would doubt there are very few or any trailers on the road including semi trailers that weigh over 22,000 lbs empty so this would leave me to believe..................... That you need a plate for your truck with a weight rating to cover the weight of the truck; the weight of the trailer; and the weight of any and all cargo. (Total Combined Gross Weight) You would also need a trailer plate to cover the weight of the trailer and the weight of any and all cargo on the trailer. (Total Gross Weight of Trailer)
