I remember when I was growing up, that summer fallow was a common practice with winter wheat. I believe it was 14 months of summer fallow followed by 10 months of crop. A lot of fellows would wait till the weeds were up in the spring, then use a moldboard plow to turn everything over. The weeds would ferment under the soil and "cook" any leftover weed seeds to death. Seemed to work as well as chemical herbicides in most cases. Well, I have to run....auction up the road.
