If it is electrical, which chances are pretty good, I would doubt it"s a solenoid problem. When the shift solenoids fail you would get wrong gear starts or skip a gear. The first thing I would do is take it to a trusted mechanic and have it scanned. Don"t diconnect the Battery! This will erase all codes stored in memory. Depending on the year of the truck it probably won"t turn on the check engine light for a powertrain code, so chances are very good there is information stored in the pcm"s memory. This trans is computer controlled, so there is a good chance that something outside the tranny is causing the problem. Possibly a Throttle POsitiion Sensor that is glitching. The computer monitors various inputs from the motor to decide when and how hard to shift. If it"s getting bad info from something that could make it intermittently shift hard. The last thing I would do is be talked into a rebuild at this point, not without first chasing down all the possibilities outside the trans. As for fluid change, it never hurts. You can have the tranny flushed, as mentioned below. With most flusher setups now, they can evacuate the pan, change the filter, refill the pan, then start the flusher. This way you get full fluid exchange, and a new filter. Alot of the quick lube shops don"t do it that way, because it"s alittle more hassle. The way I see it, not changing the filter is like taking a shower and putting dirty underwear back on. It don"t make alot of sense. Hope this helps Brokenwrench
