Honda 3813 - valve problem saga continues

Many of you may recall the recent posts on 13HP Honda engine and suspected valve problems or carburation problems with symptoms of a sever miss - the saga continues.

I tried the Sea Foam at a ratio of 1oz Sea Foam and 6oz gas (volume 2 cups) and ran that through the engine in 5 minute intervals until gone - but no improvement. Hope was it would burn out carbon if carbon buildup resulted from 25% diesel for a total volume of 1 gallon that was run through the engine.

So I bought a brand new carburetor from Honda at the tune of $112 - but no change in performance. It's not a carburetor problem - we know that for sure.

And I know positively it is not the plugs - brand new - not fouled, not the fuel system or the fuel. Let's just say there's no chance of these - the fuel system is all perfect.

So I'm thinking it is either the ignition is intermittent/weak spark or some serious carbon fouling from the diesel inside the head that would require dissasembly. I bought a Lisle spark test light - and at first glance the spark looks ok (consistent that is). But when the miss/cough occurs there is some fluxuation in the spark frequency but it is hard to tell if it is a result of engine speed or a missing spark.

Any ideas on how to positively evaluate the health of the ignition system before I plunge another $100 for a new ignition? I was thinking a timeing light may give better resolution to spark consitency - any other methods?

Maybe I should post an audio file of the engine running - although it is 8Mbytes?

Today's Featured Article - Tractor Hydraulics - The Basics - by Curtis Von Fange. Hydraulics was one of the greatest inventions for helping man compound the work he can do. It’s amazing how a little floor jack can lift tons and tons of weight with just the flick of a handle. What’s even more amazing is that all the principals of hydraulic theory can be wrapped up in such a small package. This same package applies to any hydraulic system from the largest bulldozer to the oldest and smallest tractor. This short series will take a look at the basic layout of a simple hydraul ...
