Well, I AM Catholic and this Pope failed us, big time. Yes, he was quite popular with folks who didn't want to think and on the world scene. However, he failed the children and other vulnerable people in the recent abuse scandal which has rocked the Church. He refused to meet with abuse victims, ever. He topped it off by giving Cardinal Bernard Law a cushy spot in Rome, safe from the US Legal system. When AIDS was ravaging Africa, he still insisted that couples EVEN WHERE ONE PARTNER IN A MARRIED COUPLE WAS KNOWN TO BE HIV-POSITIVE should not use condoms. In addition, he surpressed scholarship and exploration of theological ideas to an extent heretofore unknown in the past century. This Pope reminded me of the big man-about-town whom puts on a great public display, and then goes home and treats his own wife and kids like dirt. He had great compassion for Iraq. Too bad he didn't have nearly so much for Catholics.
