The 300-400 series engines are now far along enough in the evolution that they have most of the problems worked out. The oil pump is and has always been a geroter style, located on the front of the crankshaft. The injecton pump started out as an American Bosch style and wasn't very reliable. They are still a weak sister in the earlier engines, although now more reliable as a result of many changes. The earliest engines, in the 70's started out with rod problems because of the angle that the rod cap was designed to split. I personally researched the failed engines and as a result of the work, the cap angle was changed. There were many changes to the DT466 in crawler tractors which was the toughest application. They now are good engines and most versions with the Robert Bosch injecton pump are good. The 530 is a outgrowth of the DT466 and I hear is a good engine, but will have to be proven.
