OT-Light Bulb of an Idea!!!

The ignition problem has been diagnosed as a broken "actuator". My mechanic (who knows my mechanical and electrical capabilities pretty well) strongly advised against my undertaking of this project. So on to the next phase of "correcting the problem". What if, and this is a big "what if", I wire directly into the starter soleniod with a push button mounted in the cab of the pick-it-up truck? Seems like it should work. I can start it now by turning the key on, popping the hood and jumping it with a screwdriver, sooooo am I crazy to be thinking this? What potential harm am I looking at? Is this exceptionally hard on the starter solenoid? What size wire would you recommend? Thanks, Dug
